What we insure as a boat

The frame or body of your boat, the deck, cabin and permanent fixtures or fittings attached to your boat.

A device that propels or powers your boat through the water. This includes fixtures like controls, propellers and fuel tanks.

The masts, spars and rigging support and assist a sailing boat to propel it through the water. The value of these items are included in the agreed value for the hull.

A small boat you only use to get to or from your boat. You usually tow it behind or carry it on your boat.

The most we pay for loss or damage to your boat tender, including it's motor, is $2,000 as part of your agreed value.

A device that's designed to carry your boat and be towed behind a vehicle.

  • Equipment you're required to carry, such as fire extinguishers and life jackets
  • Tools you keep on your boat for emergency and maintenance reasons including spare parts
  • Protective covers and canopies designed for your boat, including biminis

What's included in my cover?

We cover your boat for loss or damage caused by accidental damage, up to your agreed value.

We cover your boat for loss or damage caused by a collision or crash, up to your agreed value.

We cover your boat for loss or damage caused by a fire, storm or flood, up to your agreed value.

We cover your boat for loss or damage caused by an earthquake, explosion or tsunami, up to your agreed value.

We cover your boat for loss or damage caused by theft or attempted theft, up to your agreed value.

We cover your boat for loss or damage caused by vandalism or a malicious act, up to your agreed value.

We pay up to $5,000 if an incident we cover causes loss or damage to your boat and you need to arrange emergency repairs or get back to land as a result. We pay any towing and sinking costs on top of your agreed value.

We cover up to $5,000 in costs for a maritime rescue service to search for or rescue anyone using your boat, and your boat, if they're lost or reported missing. We pay this on top of your agreed value.

We cover the reasonable cost to move and store your boat if an incident we cover causes loss or damage to your boat and it:

  • Sinks or is stranded on water
  • Needs transporting to a storage or holding facility

We pay this on top of your agreed value.

We cover up to $250,000 in clean up costs you're liable for, if your boat releases debris or liquid as a result of an incident we cover. We pay this on top of your agreed value.

We pay up to $10,000 towards funeral expenses if you or a family member passes away within 90 days as a result of an incident we cover. We pay this on top of your agreed value.

If an incident we cover happens and you need to check if there's loss or damage to your hull, we'll pay up to $1,000 for an inspection.

If an incident we cover causes loss or damage to your boat and it's unsafe for you to tow, we'll pay up to $750 to take your boat to a repairer or a safe place. This is paid on top of your agreed value.

We cover up to $10 million for the liability of you or anyone with permission to control your boat, if its use causes property damage, death or injury to another person.

We cover any permanent fixtures and fittings that are permanently attached to your boat. For example, winches, a fixed fridge, fixed fishing rod holders and any GPS or fish finder that's permanently wired in.

We also cover your boat's motor fixtures, including controls, propellers and fuel tanks.

We cover the equipment you legally need to carry on your boat. When you operate a large boat operating in open waters, you need to have all of the items listed below onboard. Yet, small dinghies need very little equipment.

  • Anchors and lines
  • Bailing bucket

  • Compasses and maps
  • Distress flares
  • Distress 'V' sheets
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB)

If you change the address where you usually keep your boat or if you moor your boat during your policy period, please call us on 132 132

If your boat has a lockable cabin or compartment, you can choose to cover your contents for an amount up to $10,000. The contents we cover with this option are:

  • Clothing and personal belongings
  • Household items and appliances
  • Navigation equipment
  • Diving equipment
  • Fishing equipment
  • Waterskiing equipment

With lay up cover, you can reduce your premium and the cover we provide up to 6 months while you're not using it.

We still cover your boat in the lay up period you nominate. Although, you can't use your boat in that time and you must keep it on a trailer or dry stored at the address shown on your policy.

We also cover your boat in the lay up period if you're taking your boat for a scheduled service or to be repaired by a marine mechanic or repairer.

If you want to use your boat during the lay up period, we'll only cover it if:

  • You tell us you're going to use it
  • We agree to cover you for that use, and
  • You pay us any additional premium that applies

The types of excesses that may apply if you make a claim are:

  • Basic
  • Age
  • Racing
  • Special, for example owner or operator history or boat type
